Congressman John Barrow on the Southern Border

Congressionman John Barrow recently went to the Border (you know, the one with Mexico) to find out for himself what was going on. (BTW, this interview aired Thanksgiving Eve, but unfortunately, I just could not get it posted until today.)

John’s group visited El Paso, TX and Tucson, AR. I was encouraged by John’s report. John makes it clear that we need border security. Like most everything else that we think and believe about things we don’t experience personally, the idea that our borders are being crossed by men, women and families that just want a better life is just wrong. Sure, some may just want to come to work (and send the money to Mexico), but there is also the reality that many of these individuals are nothing more than criminals and drug smugglers. While John and his group were present, a guy with $30,000 on his person (drug money) was apprehended, as well as someone wanted for murder and a tractor trailer transporting drugs. Imagine what would be coming into this country if we had “open borders,” which is the ultimate goal of those who want to reform immigration policy, rather than enforce the law.

While John didn’t call it a war, it sure seems to be one. He said that the Border Patrol has the highest rate of fatalities of any law enforcement agency in the USA. Everyday, in border cities like El Paso, the border patrol have rocks thrown at them from the Mexican side of the border as they try to apprehend someone crossing illegally.

John explains that the purpose of a border fence is not to be an absolute barrier that can’t be crossed, but more of a “force multiplier” that increases the border patrol’s available response time. In a border city, such as El Paso, TX, law enforcement only has a few seconds before an illegal alien disappears into the crowd. A fence that takes more time to cross increases the available response time to minutes. Further out, in the middle of nowhere, motion detectors and sensors accomplish the same thing by increasing the response time to hours and even days.

The most amazing thing is that thanks to former Republican Arizona Congressman, Jim Kolbe, there were absolutely no “check points” along the Arizona border with Mexico. You’ve heard of earmarks to put pork in a congressional district, well Kolbe used earmarks to prevent any funds being spent in his district for check points. Incredible! How in the hell can the security policy of this country be controlled by one congressman? At least, Kolbe did not run for re-election in 2006! The idiot.

But, as John points out, border security is not a priority for everyone and there is a lot of feet dragging. On 9-11, there were about 10,000 border patrolmen, now, six years later there are only 15,000. That’s not a lot when you think of how much border there is.

Ultimately, this issue of border security and law enforcement is an economic one. You can continue to be in favor of amnesty and paths to citizenship if you think the issue is that simple, but illegal aliens are a work force that take American jobs. You know, the ones that Ameicans won’t do! Well, John puts that argument into perspective: Americans won’t do them, sure, because you pay a Mexican wage. Pay an American wage and Americans will do it.

They (the NAFTANS) exported our manufacturing plants in the 1990’s. The next target is to cheapen the labor that can’t be exported. Think about it! Mexico does!

John Barrow (Democrat - GA 12th) on SCHIP and HOPE Tax Credit

Yesterday the Republicans once again failed to put Americans ahead of their misguided loyalty to Republican unity (whatever that means!). And for the life of me, I cannot imagine how anyone can say the Democrats have failed again to stand up to this President. When it takes a 2/3 majority to override a veto and you only have a bare majority, failure is not the fault of the Democratic Party.

In this interview John Barrow gives his perspective on why the SCHIP funding is needed. You might want to compare his interview with the one a few weeks ago with Nathan Deal (Republican GA 9th).

My problem is I do not trust the Republicans to tell me the truth about this. For example, Deal and the Republicans generally talk about this bill as “expanding” coverage and being socialized medicine. Well, it’s the same damn program we have had for 10 years and no one tried to repeal it because it was socialized medicine. We apparently have had socialized medicine for 10 years without complaint.

According to Barrow, the bill that was vetoed by Bush actually tried to correct some of the excesses that had occurred. Those excesses are providing coverage to adults, providing coverage to families with incomes in excess of 400% of the poverty level. Well, what I did not know until this interview is that all of those deviations from the original guidelines are approved and authorized by the President. Thus, when the Republicans complain about coverage being afforded to adults in New Jersey, Bush approved it. Whatever variance there is, Bush apparently approved it.

How is it expanding anything when there are hundreds of thousands of children who qualify for SCHIP but there simply are not enough funds available? The additional $35 billion over 5 years is intended to simply include more children on essentially the same basis as before. As Nancy Pelosi pointed out, 40 days of funding for the fiasco in Iraq would pay for this program. If we can’t afford SCHIP funding, we certainly can’t afford the War.

The HOPE Tax Credit has nothing to do with the HOPE Scholarship. The tax credit allows a dollar for dollar tax credit (write off) of the cost of college tuition and certain expenses. Originally, the maximum credit was $1,500 per year for a maximum of two years, but apparently it has increased over the years to $1,650 in 2006. That adds up to a tax credit totaling $3,000. John has introduced a bill to increase this tax credit to $3,000 per year for 4 years which would allow a total credit of $12,000, an increase of $9,000.

The average student loan for a college graduate is about $16,000. With the benefit of a $12,000 tax credit, the ulitmate burden of the loan is lessened substantially. The idea behind the increase in the credit is to give people a break if they are willing to invest in their education and thus the future of America. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Interview with Congressman John Barrow, GA-12th

This interview is kind of a hodgpodge of comments on recent events from the resignation of Karl Rove to the possibility that Sam Nunn may re-enter the political arena. Also covered: security at the Port of Savannah; nanotechnology in the 12th, repealing the increased assessments on student loans, supporting our troops with boots and body armor, the anticipated report from General Patreaus, funding and health care at the Veterans Administration, the appropriation bills passed by the House and “no new deficit spending!”

John has conducted 54 “Town Hall Meetings” in the 12th since the first of the year in an effort to keep up with the people of the 12th.

GriftDrift Says It Better!

A quick follow-up to the last post (See below).

I have not been at this stuff long enough to know what names means and don’t mean. Griftdrift to the rescue!

Anonymity doesn’t bother me when you are talking about just posting comments or blabbing about something. But if you are going to attack someone, call them a liar, call them deceitful, pretend to deal with the facts, particularly in the context of the website in question, the only reason you would not want to be identified is you, yourself, are lying.

Disgusting little turds!

The Worst Kind of Website: Deceitful

Sunday afternoon I happened to come across a post by Jason Pye in Peach Pundit that said: “Here is a nicely put together blog that goes after John Barrow.” I checked it out and found an attack website aimed at John Barrow. There was nothing “nice” about it. The comments to the post indicated that most people saw this for what it was, total crap.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I have supported John Barrow in the past and expect to continue to do so in the future. However, no one is perfect, but this new website (I refuse to give you the link to such trash.) accused him of lies and worse. Lies always peek my interest and if I found out that John Barrow was lying about something, I would expose it just as certainly as I would anyone else’s lie.

Being a believer is fairness, I shot off an email through the website that said I hosted a radio show and would like to interview someone from the site. Here is the response I received:

We’d like to apologize. We’re doing this to create conversation and to bring forward the facts. We’d be more than willing to provide you with an information and/or statements.

We don’t have any intentions of going on any show. A few of us have listened to it from time to time though.

Thanks Wilson!

I was a little surprised that they wanted to create conversation and bring forth the facts and insisted on remaining anonymous. Something about that just does not fit. Anyway, being the kind radio host I am, I inquired again why they would not give an interview.

I received this reply:

We are remaining anonymous because the issue cannot become purely political.

Barrow has mislead us and runs smear campaigns. We will not become a subject of his attacks on a personal level. There are no code names or methods of elaborately hiding our identities, simply we have not identified ourselves.

We released the following statement to a blogger earlier:

We seek to encourage and spark debate. There is a Representative who has been misleading the people of Georgia’s 12th district. The man runs a campaign built on lies and deceit, cannot manage his personal life, and partners with Liberal Speaker Pelosi 79% of the time. The focus will continue to remain on Mr. Barrow.

We’ve already had enough of this Congress and its games.

Identifying ourselves serves no purpose in which we seek, therefore it will not happen on a conscience effort [not yet anyway]. We would like to applaud our great state for its blogging community. The people represented on our friend’s list know not of our identity.

Only with your help will our content improve. According the the FEC statue we plan to remain anonymous, as we will not spend or receive more than the law allots. This grants true freedom of speech. Our patriotism lies in the hands that manufactured the First Amendment and our brave men and women serving this country.

We do hope you’ll help us and take the seat from Barrow. Let’s give it to one deserving - one of the people of this district. The people are meant to represent, not those who presume their own greatness.

Get the word out: JohnBarrow.org for the Real Barrow!

Thank you.
JohnBarrow.org Team

Hope this help Wilson.

No, that did not help. I did wonder who the blogger was. I sent them this message and have not heard from them since this morning.

Do you believe that being anonymous gives you any credibility? If you aren’t willing to speak the truth in public then you are just a hack, whoever you are. If Barrow has lied or misled anyone, then the facts need to be debated and argued etc. However, the fact that someone writes something and puts it on the internet means nothing if they are secretive.

One more chance to reconsider and give an interview or at least identify yourself.

I am still waiting for an interview, but of course, we all know why the people and organization behind this site is not going to give anyone (maybe Bill O’Reilly) an honest interview. Whoever they are, they are the worst about America, the are the worst in the blogosphere, they are just the worst, period. Gutless, weasels! They are in the same group as child molesters. Worthless.

I am sure I will never hear from them, but I still hope to reach out and touch them.
