Election Analysis 2008 With GriftDrift

Here it is! Hot off the airwaves!!!

James Williams, GriftDrift, does a great election results analysis–early in the morning, at that. State, National, you name it, we got it.

In order to get this to you, I am foregoing any attempt to summarize.

If you want to see the vote tallys, go to the Secretary of State’s website.

UPDATE:

It looks like we will have several run-off elections December 2, 2008.

U.S. Senate: Saxby Chambliss (R) (49.8%) vs. Jim Martin (D) (46.8%) This is still close with 96% of precincts in.

Public Service Commission-District 4
: Lauren McDonald (R) (47.3%) vs. Jim Powell (D) (47.8%)

Court of Appeals: Sara Doyle (22.5%) vs. Mike Sheffield (20.9%) (There were 5 other candidates that split 57% of the vote. Just the top 2 will be in the run-off.

The Libertarian candidate in the U.S. Senate race (Allen Buckley 3.4%) and the Public Service Commission (Brandon Givens 4.9%) captured enough votes to bring about the run-off.

Barrow Receives Endorsement from Savannah Morning News!

On Friday, The Savannah Morning News endorsed John Barrow for re-election to Congress from the 12th District. This is the first time the newspaper has endorsed Barrow.

12th District voters should send incumbent John Barrow back to Washington.

TWO-TERM CONGRESSMAN John Barrow is a centrist Democrat who generally votes according to the needs of Georgia’s 12th District, not the will of liberal Democratic leaders in Congress.

His record is largely pro-business, pro-growth, pro-natural security, pro-Savannah port and pro-Second Amendment - positions in tune with the majority of constituents he represents. For this reason and others, we recommend that district voters keep the Savannah legislator in the U.S. House for another term.

Mr. Barrow is one of those lawmakers who has matured and grown while in public office. In 2004, when he knocked off Republican incumbent Max Burns, there was considerable concern the freshman legislator would be a rubber stamp for the high-tax, anti-business wing of his party.

Fortunately, that didn’t happen. Indeed, he showed his independence by voting to protect gun manufacturers from frivolous lawsuits, which helped earn him this year’s endorsement of the National Rifle Association’s political action committee. In 2006, he won a close race in a rematch with Mr. Burns, whom this newspaper endorsed at that time.

But for this election, we believe Mr. Barrow has earned a return trip to Washington. We support his candidacy.

Put simply, he has proven his worth and his mettle. He understands that the road to prosperity and a better life in this part of Georgia is paved with jobs and paychecks, not handouts and giveaways. He knows that the nation must have the necessary tools to protect itself against terrorists. He correctly realizes that the prescription for energy independence includes safe and responsible drilling as an ingredient.

This may come as a surprise, but Mr. Barrow recently earned a higher score than U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Savannah, from the pro-business U.S. Chamber of Commerce. On the chamber’s latest scorecard on key votes, Mr. Barrow earned an 80 percent (out of 100), tying him with U.S. Rep. Tom Price, R-Roswell, at the top of Georgia’s delegation.

Mr. Kingston, who’s solid on economic issues, got a 65. (Mr. Kingston’s cumulative score during his 16 years in office is 87 percent; Mr. Barrow’s score is 74 percent.)

Liberal Democrats babble that groups like the chamber are simply arm-twisters for the Republican Party. But they are the lawmakers who are out of touch, as bashing business only cripples job creation and growth at a time this country sorely needs it.

That’s why Mr. Barrow is one of several dozen conservative and moderate House Dems known as “blue dog Democrats” who don’t march in lockstep with Speaker Nancy Pelosi. (Southern Democrats once were known as yellow-dog Democrats - party loyalists who’d vote for a yellow dog if it had a “D” after its name. Blue dogs are those who have been choked blue by liberal party leaders.) This bloc influences legislation in a positive way within the majority party.

Mr. Barrow broke ranks with Ms. Pelosi and voted to support continued funding for U.S. troops in Iraq and against mandated timetables for withdrawal. We criticized his opposition to the surge, however. And we remain deeply critical of his support of a bill, which Barack Obama supports, that will do away with the secret ballot process to unionize workplaces. Such a law, which we hope Republican senators have enough votes to filibuster, will spell doom for any economic recovery.

But on balance, Mr. Barrow has been good for the 12th District. He fairly reflects this politically balanced area, which stretches from Savannah on the coast to Augusta upriver and includes many smaller communities and rural areas in between. Republican opponent John Stone, a former aide to Max Burns and the late Charles Norwood, is well-versed on the issues. But we are concerned that his protectionist slant on trade could hurt Savannah’s port and the region.

Conversely, Mr. Barrow has been solidly behind the port. He could play a key role in getting needed federal funds for its deepening. This blue dog can hunt, and voters should ship the incumbent back to the House next Tuesday.

Savannah Daily News Endorses Barrow and Gillespie for Congress!

The Savannah Daily News has made its endorsements for Congress in the 1st and 12th District. Their selections:

Bill Gillespie for the 1st District.

John Barrow for the 12th District.

This is the first time SDN has not endorsed Jack Kingston. The edorsement explains why:

……It is painful to no longer endorse our friend, Jack Kingston. Many of us know Jack and his family personally and cherish their friendship and their public service. Jack Kingston is a good man, personally, but he has never had a viable or credible Democratic opponent to truly consider.

And these times force us to step back, and take a hard look at his actual voting record on critical issues including fighting all measures to set a timeline to get out of Iraq, his failure to fight runaway Federal spending as a member of the House Appropriations committee that develops the budget, his leadership in defense of Tom Delay and President Bush as well as Republican party smear campaigns this election cycle, and his failure to file his personal financial disclosure information due last May 15 even though he was up for re-election. These votes and others lead us to believe that it is time for a change in 1st District representation.

Frankly, Jack began to lose our support last Feb. 27 when he appeared on the Dan Abrams show and said it was okay to “question Sen. Barack Obama’s patriotism because he doesn’t regularly wear an American flag lapel pin.”

Problem was, sitting there on the TV set with the cameras rolling, Jack wasn’t wearing a flag pin. These types of smear tactics are repugnant and demean elected officials in an era when voters are begging for straight talk on the issues versus old-style personal attack politics.

Yet, he continues to try to use such tactics, seeking to smear his opponent Bill Gillespie in this race, accusing him of lying about his educational degrees and other achievements, despite two news organizations having confirmed that Gillespie’s resume is accurate………

And its reasons for endorsing John Barrow are:

John Barrow deserves our support for another term as the Congressman from Georgia’s 12th District.

While his voting patterns may not be liberal enough for some in the 12th District, particularly in the Savannah area, his legal mind continues to serve us well, demonstrating a pattern of pulling apart legislation and voting on the quality of a bill and its intention versus just following a straight political party line.

He voted against the bailout bill because there was “too much downside for the taxpayer. There were specific areas of fraud and abuse that were skillfully manipulated out of the final product,” he says. That approach to in-depth study is what we depend on from our elected representatives.

And we must send representatives to Congress who will take tough stands on the legislative issues ahead for the 111th congress, issues in addition to current financial crisis matters. One of those issues for the 12th Congressional District is needed reform of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, up for renewal in the next session. Improving public schools and developing a more qualified work force are seismic issues for the district.

Barrow shares our views, believing that NCLB was a good idea that “got hijacked from how it was designed. There is nothing wrong with standards, nothing wrong with being sure that Georgia is getting the same bang for its educational buck as Texas, but the Bush administration failed from the beginning to fund the bill, which is exactly what they promised they would not do if it was enacted,” he states. “So we’re raiding the local tax base to continue to fund federally mandated educational programs.” We couldn’t make these important points any more succinctly than John’s own words.

A 2008 study from the U.S. Department of Education, in the recently released “Reading First Impact Study: Interim Report,” states that the performance of students in 12 states who were in grades one to three during the 2004-5 and 2005-6 school years and completed the Reading First Program, a major billion dollar a year NCLB effort, had proven “ineffective.” A final report on the impacts from 2004-2007 (three school years with Reading First funding) and on the relationships between changes in instructional practice and student reading comprehension is expected in late 2008. It’s an issue ahead that needs tough analysis, and tough stands to ensure funding in a time when there will be little money to spare.

His opponent, John Stone (R), represents the old school party politics of big lobbyists and insider power players. He has spoken out on few issues in this campaign with the exception of his recent one-day media event in Savannah to propose his solution to the U.S. economic crisis, including ideas that cannot be enacted, such as imposing a moratorium on home mortgage foreclosures.

Barrow has high marks and endorsements from business organizations such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. And his position on immigration is realistic in light of the needs of Georgia and the 12th District. He supports securing the borders and enforcing the laws we have but without dramatic measures supported by many.

Most importantly, John Barrow is accessible and in the district often, spending endless weekends in its small towns, meeting face-to-face with voters, versus leaving all the constituent work to paid staffers.

John Barrow is a Blue Dog, fiscal conservative Democrat in an era when we’re all feeling pretty blue about the economy, and we need his take on the solutions

John Barrow, Congressman, GA 12th

I guess you could call John Barrow a maverick. He was first elected to Congress in 2004 and since that time has voted contrary to the Democratic leadership on things like immigration. Most recently he voted against the baleout of Wall Street. As John explains in this interview, the Bush Administration pushed fast and hard to get a $700 billion baleout for corporate business, but failed to provide adequate consideration and protection for the homeowners. Further, John, and others, were not satisfied with what appeared to be a blank check for the Bush Adminstration. For example, they wanted to approve the baleout in stages, rather than all or nothing. As it is, the Bush Administration could conceivably get control of all $700 billion before they leave office.

Another issue was the “golden parchute” for Wall Street executives. John says the attempts to impose restrictions on executive compensation were so watered down as to be meaningless.

Of course, the economy is the issue that is on everyone’s mind. When Bush took office the national debt was about $4.5 trillion. Today, it is over $10 trillion. When Bush took office I was a Republican, but it took about 2 years to convince me that he wasn’t a Republican. Oh, Bush and his cronies, say they are Republicans but they do not have a clue about the Republicanism of Barry Goldwater.

John believes it is time to start protecting the American economy. While it may be important to open up foreign markets, if doing so destoys the American industry and workers’ jobs, it is not worth it. For that reason, John has voted against several trade bills.

When it comes to energy, John favors an all out effort to achieve energy independence. We should have learned in the 1970s that our energy policy should not be tied to the price of oil. If we only focus on energy issues when the price of oil is high, all the oil producing countries have to do is to lower the price and we forget about it until the next crisis. What we have needed for 30 years and not had, is leadership. Leaders see the future, think about what is coming and steer the country on a safe course. Politicians put tomorrow first, because tomorrow they are up for re-election, tomorrow they have a fundraiserm, and tomorrow they can hide behind something else to cover their sins. Tomorrow is already too late!

Leadership is non-partisan.

Congressman John Barrow on the Southern Border

Congressionman John Barrow recently went to the Border (you know, the one with Mexico) to find out for himself what was going on. (BTW, this interview aired Thanksgiving Eve, but unfortunately, I just could not get it posted until today.)

John’s group visited El Paso, TX and Tucson, AR. I was encouraged by John’s report. John makes it clear that we need border security. Like most everything else that we think and believe about things we don’t experience personally, the idea that our borders are being crossed by men, women and families that just want a better life is just wrong. Sure, some may just want to come to work (and send the money to Mexico), but there is also the reality that many of these individuals are nothing more than criminals and drug smugglers. While John and his group were present, a guy with $30,000 on his person (drug money) was apprehended, as well as someone wanted for murder and a tractor trailer transporting drugs. Imagine what would be coming into this country if we had “open borders,” which is the ultimate goal of those who want to reform immigration policy, rather than enforce the law.

While John didn’t call it a war, it sure seems to be one. He said that the Border Patrol has the highest rate of fatalities of any law enforcement agency in the USA. Everyday, in border cities like El Paso, the border patrol have rocks thrown at them from the Mexican side of the border as they try to apprehend someone crossing illegally.

John explains that the purpose of a border fence is not to be an absolute barrier that can’t be crossed, but more of a “force multiplier” that increases the border patrol’s available response time. In a border city, such as El Paso, TX, law enforcement only has a few seconds before an illegal alien disappears into the crowd. A fence that takes more time to cross increases the available response time to minutes. Further out, in the middle of nowhere, motion detectors and sensors accomplish the same thing by increasing the response time to hours and even days.

The most amazing thing is that thanks to former Republican Arizona Congressman, Jim Kolbe, there were absolutely no “check points” along the Arizona border with Mexico. You’ve heard of earmarks to put pork in a congressional district, well Kolbe used earmarks to prevent any funds being spent in his district for check points. Incredible! How in the hell can the security policy of this country be controlled by one congressman? At least, Kolbe did not run for re-election in 2006! The idiot.

But, as John points out, border security is not a priority for everyone and there is a lot of feet dragging. On 9-11, there were about 10,000 border patrolmen, now, six years later there are only 15,000. That’s not a lot when you think of how much border there is.

Ultimately, this issue of border security and law enforcement is an economic one. You can continue to be in favor of amnesty and paths to citizenship if you think the issue is that simple, but illegal aliens are a work force that take American jobs. You know, the ones that Ameicans won’t do! Well, John puts that argument into perspective: Americans won’t do them, sure, because you pay a Mexican wage. Pay an American wage and Americans will do it.

They (the NAFTANS) exported our manufacturing plants in the 1990’s. The next target is to cheapen the labor that can’t be exported. Think about it! Mexico does!

John Barrow (Democrat - GA 12th) on SCHIP and HOPE Tax Credit

Yesterday the Republicans once again failed to put Americans ahead of their misguided loyalty to Republican unity (whatever that means!). And for the life of me, I cannot imagine how anyone can say the Democrats have failed again to stand up to this President. When it takes a 2/3 majority to override a veto and you only have a bare majority, failure is not the fault of the Democratic Party.

In this interview John Barrow gives his perspective on why the SCHIP funding is needed. You might want to compare his interview with the one a few weeks ago with Nathan Deal (Republican GA 9th).

My problem is I do not trust the Republicans to tell me the truth about this. For example, Deal and the Republicans generally talk about this bill as “expanding” coverage and being socialized medicine. Well, it’s the same damn program we have had for 10 years and no one tried to repeal it because it was socialized medicine. We apparently have had socialized medicine for 10 years without complaint.

According to Barrow, the bill that was vetoed by Bush actually tried to correct some of the excesses that had occurred. Those excesses are providing coverage to adults, providing coverage to families with incomes in excess of 400% of the poverty level. Well, what I did not know until this interview is that all of those deviations from the original guidelines are approved and authorized by the President. Thus, when the Republicans complain about coverage being afforded to adults in New Jersey, Bush approved it. Whatever variance there is, Bush apparently approved it.

How is it expanding anything when there are hundreds of thousands of children who qualify for SCHIP but there simply are not enough funds available? The additional $35 billion over 5 years is intended to simply include more children on essentially the same basis as before. As Nancy Pelosi pointed out, 40 days of funding for the fiasco in Iraq would pay for this program. If we can’t afford SCHIP funding, we certainly can’t afford the War.

The HOPE Tax Credit has nothing to do with the HOPE Scholarship. The tax credit allows a dollar for dollar tax credit (write off) of the cost of college tuition and certain expenses. Originally, the maximum credit was $1,500 per year for a maximum of two years, but apparently it has increased over the years to $1,650 in 2006. That adds up to a tax credit totaling $3,000. John has introduced a bill to increase this tax credit to $3,000 per year for 4 years which would allow a total credit of $12,000, an increase of $9,000.

The average student loan for a college graduate is about $16,000. With the benefit of a $12,000 tax credit, the ulitmate burden of the loan is lessened substantially. The idea behind the increase in the credit is to give people a break if they are willing to invest in their education and thus the future of America. Sounds like a good idea to me.

Interview with Congressman John Barrow, GA-12th

This interview is kind of a hodgpodge of comments on recent events from the resignation of Karl Rove to the possibility that Sam Nunn may re-enter the political arena. Also covered: security at the Port of Savannah; nanotechnology in the 12th, repealing the increased assessments on student loans, supporting our troops with boots and body armor, the anticipated report from General Patreaus, funding and health care at the Veterans Administration, the appropriation bills passed by the House and “no new deficit spending!”

John has conducted 54 “Town Hall Meetings” in the 12th since the first of the year in an effort to keep up with the people of the 12th.

GriftDrift Says It Better!

A quick follow-up to the last post (See below).

I have not been at this stuff long enough to know what names means and don’t mean. Griftdrift to the rescue!

Anonymity doesn’t bother me when you are talking about just posting comments or blabbing about something. But if you are going to attack someone, call them a liar, call them deceitful, pretend to deal with the facts, particularly in the context of the website in question, the only reason you would not want to be identified is you, yourself, are lying.

Disgusting little turds!

The Worst Kind of Website: Deceitful

Sunday afternoon I happened to come across a post by Jason Pye in Peach Pundit that said: “Here is a nicely put together blog that goes after John Barrow.” I checked it out and found an attack website aimed at John Barrow. There was nothing “nice” about it. The comments to the post indicated that most people saw this for what it was, total crap.

In the interest of full disclosure, I should say that I have supported John Barrow in the past and expect to continue to do so in the future. However, no one is perfect, but this new website (I refuse to give you the link to such trash.) accused him of lies and worse. Lies always peek my interest and if I found out that John Barrow was lying about something, I would expose it just as certainly as I would anyone else’s lie.

Being a believer is fairness, I shot off an email through the website that said I hosted a radio show and would like to interview someone from the site. Here is the response I received:

We’d like to apologize. We’re doing this to create conversation and to bring forward the facts. We’d be more than willing to provide you with an information and/or statements.

We don’t have any intentions of going on any show. A few of us have listened to it from time to time though.

Thanks Wilson!

I was a little surprised that they wanted to create conversation and bring forth the facts and insisted on remaining anonymous. Something about that just does not fit. Anyway, being the kind radio host I am, I inquired again why they would not give an interview.

I received this reply:

We are remaining anonymous because the issue cannot become purely political.

Barrow has mislead us and runs smear campaigns. We will not become a subject of his attacks on a personal level. There are no code names or methods of elaborately hiding our identities, simply we have not identified ourselves.

We released the following statement to a blogger earlier:

We seek to encourage and spark debate. There is a Representative who has been misleading the people of Georgia’s 12th district. The man runs a campaign built on lies and deceit, cannot manage his personal life, and partners with Liberal Speaker Pelosi 79% of the time. The focus will continue to remain on Mr. Barrow.

We’ve already had enough of this Congress and its games.

Identifying ourselves serves no purpose in which we seek, therefore it will not happen on a conscience effort [not yet anyway]. We would like to applaud our great state for its blogging community. The people represented on our friend’s list know not of our identity.

Only with your help will our content improve. According the the FEC statue we plan to remain anonymous, as we will not spend or receive more than the law allots. This grants true freedom of speech. Our patriotism lies in the hands that manufactured the First Amendment and our brave men and women serving this country.

We do hope you’ll help us and take the seat from Barrow. Let’s give it to one deserving - one of the people of this district. The people are meant to represent, not those who presume their own greatness.

Get the word out: JohnBarrow.org for the Real Barrow!

Thank you.
JohnBarrow.org Team

Hope this help Wilson.

No, that did not help. I did wonder who the blogger was. I sent them this message and have not heard from them since this morning.

Do you believe that being anonymous gives you any credibility? If you aren’t willing to speak the truth in public then you are just a hack, whoever you are. If Barrow has lied or misled anyone, then the facts need to be debated and argued etc. However, the fact that someone writes something and puts it on the internet means nothing if they are secretive.

One more chance to reconsider and give an interview or at least identify yourself.

I am still waiting for an interview, but of course, we all know why the people and organization behind this site is not going to give anyone (maybe Bill O’Reilly) an honest interview. Whoever they are, they are the worst about America, the are the worst in the blogosphere, they are just the worst, period. Gutless, weasels! They are in the same group as child molesters. Worthless.

I am sure I will never hear from them, but I still hope to reach out and touch them.
