Jane Kidd was elected Chair of the Democratic Party of Georgia in January 2007. No doubt she has her work cut out for her in a state that is still red. It is all about grassroots, grassroots, grassroots, something the Democrats took for granted in past years. But Jane has a plan: work hard, then work harder.
Maybe Jane should distribute copies of “Why Mommy is a Democrat.”
Jane attended the recent CNN/YouTube Democratic Debate and invited all the Democratic Presidential Candidates to visit Georgia on January 30, 2008 to attend the annual Jefferson-Jackson Dinner. Note the date was strategically chosen just a week before Super Tuesday and the Georgia Presidential Primary.
One thing that helps Jane in her job is the recent vote in the Senate regarding the SCHIP funding, Peachcare for Kids as it is known in the State of Georgia. Both Georgia Senators, Chambliss and Isakson, voted against the funding. The legislation passed without them, 68 to 31, and awaits President Bush’s threatened veto.
Republicans who voted against the funding will have a lot of hard questions to answer come next election. Sen. Isakson has already posted his explanation. You can read Sen. Chambliss’ explanation, but funny thing is, it is identical to Isakson’s.
Apparently, the doctors thought it was a good bill according to the American College of Physicians. If you really want a better understanding, read this analysis by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.
But what do I know? Well, here is what I don’t know. Why are we griping about spending $35 billion on healthcare for kids when the Iraq War is costing $100 billion and more a year? I would have appreciated half this much attention to details before we took the road less traveled, the Road to Baghdad.
And why is it that everything everyday Americans want and need costs too much, but everything Bush wants is a matter of national security?
I’m gonna think about all of this the next time I stand in front of that computer with no paper trail and cast my electrical impulse for the person I think I am voting for.
